Spring is so close we can almost feel it. Even if your fingers aren’t yet thawed out from the winter cold, it's time to start planning for Spring Break.

You may think your budget can't allow for too much fun, but with the help of military discounts, you can have tons of Spring Break fun without breaking the bank!

Here are 6 great Spring Break ideas for the entire family:

1. Plan a Staycation.

Staying home doesn't have to be boring. I live in an area that has countless attractions to offer visitors, but I never take advantage of visiting them. Spring Break is the perfect time to check out what your area has to offer. Even if you have to travel an hour or so, it's better than using up an entire day of travel time.

Visit your local military installation’s ITT office to get some ideas and possibly discounted tickets to local attractions. 

You can also use this time to check out local restaurants you haven't had a chance to try. Some restaurants, like Melting Pot, Greene Turtle and Hard Rock Cafe, advertise military discounts, but many restaurants don’t advertise so make sure you ask wherever you dine. 

Then go see that movie you keep hearing about! Movie theaters like Cinemark and AMC offer military discounts.

2. Take a Cruise.

I know what you’re thinking: How is THAT affordable? Easy! Many cruise lines offer military discounts including Carnival Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Disney Cruise Line. 

3. Visit Theme Parks.

Perhaps there is a park that your family would love to visit. There are a wide variety of theme parks available that offer military discounts. Get your thrills at Busch Gardens, pose with your favorite Disney Character at Disney World, or even get your groove on at Dollywood.  (Click here for more on military discounts at amusement parks.)

4. Relax at a Resort.

Sandals resorts offer a 10% military discount. They have locations in beautiful places like the Bahamas, Jamaica, Barbados and more.

You can also check into Armed Forces Recreation Centers, or AFRCs, which are Joint Service Facilities operated by the Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Programs. So book your stay at a resort and spend your Spring Break relaxing in the sun.

5. Hit the Road.

Even if you don’t go on a cruise or head to a resort, Spring Break is a great time for a road trip. Whether you’re visiting family and friends or heading out for some sight-seeing, make sure to use all the military discounts out there while you travel.

6. Learn a Lesson.

Learn during Spring Break? Really? Remember, learning can be fun and can create wonderful memories for everyone. Visit places like Colonial Williamsburg, The National Aquarium, Presidential Libraries, and National Parks – all with military discounts! Depending on where you live, even travel can be extremely affordable. 

Blue Star Families also offers their Blue Star Theatres program, which gets you free or discounted tickets to more than 100 theatres and playhouses around the country.

Another learning experience for Spring Break is to find some local volunteering opportunities. Depending on your family members’ ages, you can volunteer at local soup kitchens or nursing homes and not only make an impact on those you help, but your children can learn the valuable lesson of helping others.

 20 Businesses offering Military Discounts

The Hampton Roads area in Virginia, which includes Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, is home to several military installations. And it’s not hard to find local and regional businesses and attractions that offer military discounts in this area highly populated with military families. 

Whether you live in Hampton Roads or you’re just visiting, the following are 20 military discounts to check into while you’re here. Don’t forget your military ID!

Keep in mind that MWR Information, Tickets and Tours (ITT) offices offer discounted tickets to parks, museums, movie theaters, and concerts. So before purchasing tickets either online or on location to local attractions, take the time to call or visit an ITT office at any base in the area (like NAS Oceana, Naval Station Norfolk, and JEB Little Creek-Fort Story).  For instance, you can get season passes to Ocean Breeze Water Park (see below) for cheaper prices than you would get at the park itself, which only offers a military discount on daily admission tickets.

1. Busch Gardens

Through the SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment program “Waves of Honor,” military members can receive one complimentary admission per year to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. This discount includes active duty military, activated or drilling Reservists, and National Guardsmen, as well as three direct dependents. Register online or buy tickets at the park.

2. Colonial Williamsburg 

Active duty military and immediate family members can receive a Military One Day Plus Pass to Colonial Williamsburg through MWR/ITT offices, or 10% off on multi-day tickets at their ticket windows.  Colonial Williamsburg has also joined the Blue Star Partnership, which means that between Memorial Day and Labor Day, military families are offered one day of free admission to the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. Tickets are available at the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center or the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum.

3. Farm Fresh 

Farm Fresh supermarkets offer a 10% military discount every day on store-brand merchandise. (They also showed their support for military families in the face of sequestration by offering a 10% discount every Monday on entire grocery purchases during the furloughs of civil service commissary employees and commissary closures.)

4. Great Wolf Lodge 

The Great Wolf Lodge, a huge indoor water park in Williamsburg, offers a 20% discount to military families through their Howling Heroes program. However, they set aside a specific number of military discounts per day, so try to book your reservations well in advance to make sure the discount is available for the dates you want.

5. Hampton Coliseum 

The Hampton Coliseum in Hampton hosts a variety of entertainment including concerts, Monster Jam and family shows like Disney on Ice. Military discounts are available on tickets for some events here but not all, so it’s best to call ahead and ask before purchasing tickets.

6. King’s Dominion  

Active duty and retired military can buy a single day general admission ticket to King’s Dominion theme park for $38.99 per person. Purchase up to 6 tickets at the gate with a military ID.

King’s Dominion also offers seasonal discounts. During Military Appreciation Days, Memorial Day weekend, and Fourth of July weekend, admission is free for active and retired military.

7. Nauticus 

At the Nauticus science center and museum in Norfolk active duty servicemembers can get $3 off adult tickets every day. Spend a day learning through exhibits and activities at this interactive science and technology center that is home of the Battleship Wisconsin and the Hampton Roads Naval Museum.

8. Norfolk Botanical Garden 

The Norfolk Botanical Garden is a Virginia Historic Landmark filled with beautiful themed gardens, 95 species of birds, and 30 kinds of butterflies. They offer $1 off general admission tickets with a military ID. 

Don’t miss their holiday Garden of Lights on display from Thanksgiving night through December 31. Plan to check out the million twinkling lights on a Monday night to take advantage of the USAA-sponsored Military Monday Appreciation Nights and pay only $10 per car (instead of $15).

9. Norfolk International Airport 

The Norfolk International Airport in Norfolk, Virginia offers special discounts on airfares for military service members and their dependents.

10. Norfolk Tides Baseball  

Active duty servicemembers and dependents can enjoy a military discount on single game tickets to Norfolk Tides baseball games. Purchase tickets in advance online for $9 or at the box office for $11. Play ball!

11. Ocean Breeze Water Park 

Ocean Breeze in Virginia Beach, which is open from mid-May through early September, is a family-friendly water park that features over 30 rides, slides and attractions. Enjoy free parking, free sunscreen and free inner tubes.  They offer a military discount of $5 off daily admission tickets.

12. Shopping 

The Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach is filled with stores that show their appreciation for the military with discounts.

The MacArthur Center in Norfolk is a shopping mall with 140 stores. Although not all stores in the mall offer military discounts, many of them do. 

The MacArthur Center isn’t just for shopping! Each year starting in November and going through January, an ice skating rink opens up outside the mall. Military personnel and their family members receive $2 off the admission price, so lace up your skates and head over for winter fun for a discount.

The Williamsburg Premium Outlets in Williamsburg boasts 135 outlet stores including Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, and Nike. They charge $5 for a VIP coupon book that houses 104 coupons to use at the outlets. But for military members, that coupon book is free. Visit the customer service desk with your military ID for your free book.

13. Simply Storage 

 

Military families are always on the move, and during times of transition, storage of personal property is often an issue. Simply Storage in Virginia Beach wants to help by offering military personnel a 15% discount on all storage units.

14. Virginia Air and Space Center  

The Virginia Air and Space Center, located in Hampton, Virginia, is the visitor center for NASA Langley Research Center and Langley Air Force Base. It features interactive aviation exhibits spanning 100 years of flight, over 30 historic aircraft, a hands-on space exploration gallery, space flight artifacts, and more. They offer military discounts on admission.

15. Virginia Aquarium 

The Virginia Aquarium offers a $2 off Aquarium admission to active duty military personnel, immediate family members, and retired military with a valid ID. Discounted tickets for the whole family are available at most MWR offices. Choose between admission to the aquarium only or a combination that includes a 3D IMAX movie. And make sure you plan for a boat excursion like Dolphin Watching, Cruise the Creek, and Winter Wildlife.

16. Virginia Beach National Golf Course 

Grab your golf clubs and head over to Virginia Beach National to use your military discount. In season (April through October), military green fee rates are $50 on weekdays and $60 on weekends. Out of season (November through March), military rates are $40 on weekdays and $50 on the weekends.

17. Virginia Living Museum 

At the Virginia Living Museum in Newport News, all military ID holders can receive 10% off general membership or $1 off per family member for daily admission tickets. Spend a day learning about 250 living species native to Virginia through discovery centers and interactive exhibits. While you’re there, try to catch a planetarium show and stop by the observatory.

18. Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum 

The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, located in Portsmouth, honors over 350 Virginia athletes, coaches, administrators, educators and journalists who have influenced the sports’ world.  There are 9 exhibit areas that showcase 20 sports. And military personnel can get $1 off daily admission.

19. Virginia Zoo 

The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk offers $1 off general admission for active duty, retirees, and spouses every day. The zoo also holds an annual Military Appreciation Day (in 2014 it's held on October 12) when admission is free for military members and their families.

20. Ynot Pizza  

Every Monday, all active duty military and dependents will receive 10% off dine-in orders at Ynot Pizza & Italian Cuisine. Bring your military ID!
